Hydraulic calculation

Pump duty, TDH
& motor sizing

Establish the duty point for each operating pump, calculate total dynamic head and estimate the hydraulic, shaft and electrical power requirements.

Define the hydraulic duty

Your details

Required so Metsiworx can retain the calculation record and contact you if an engineering concern is identified.

Project

Station flow and pump arrangement

The total station flow is divided equally between the duty pumps. Standby pumps are recorded but excluded from normal operating demand.

Total dynamic head

Calculation basisTDH = static head + friction + discharge pressure head − suction pressure head

Use gauge pressures at the defined suction and discharge boundaries. For an open suction reservoir, enter 0 kPa suction pressure. Enter 0 m where a loss component does not apply.

Efficiency and electrical assumptions Required for motor sizing

Use efficiency at the proposed duty point—not maximum or best-efficiency-point efficiency unless they coincide. Confirm the final motor rating against the pump curve, absorbed-power curve and manufacturer data.

From station demand
to preliminary motor size

01

Duty per pump

Total station flow is divided by the number of simultaneously operating duty pumps. Each standby pump is excluded from normal demand.

02

Total dynamic head

Static elevation, line losses and the difference between discharge and suction pressure heads are combined using the entered fluid density.

03

Power and motor

Hydraulic power is adjusted for pump and motor efficiency. The motor margin is applied to shaft power before selecting the next common rating.
